On June 30, 2017, China’s National Radio and Television Administration issued a controversial set of “General Rules for the Review of Contents of Online Audiovisual Programs”, criminalizing homosexual content. This incident prompted me to investigate the censorship of queer films by the regime since the 20th century, with the first relevant documents published as early as 1997.
